In collaboration with Speak City Heights, The AjA Project asked students at Crawford High School to use their cameras to explore what most affects their health at school. Ismahan, 18, chose to draw attention to the importance of after-school tutors, particularly for students learning English as a second language.

“The afterschool tutor is very important because they help the newcomer to learn English,” she said.

While Ismahan said she is grateful for the afterschool tutoring program at Crawford, she also feels that more tutors are still needed. If she could change something at Crawford, she would hire more after-school tutors to help students who are struggling and learning English for the first time.
