Project Description

JCCS Reflections – ‘Let Me Tell You My Name’

The AjA Project partners with SDCOE Juvenile Court and Community Schools to provide students with access to innovative arts-based programming at school sites across San Diego County. Through AjA programs, young people use photography and visual arts to explore aspects of personal identity and social justice in such a way that creates transformation within their perspectives and ambitions for the future.

In this project, participants reflected on and analyzed different stereotypes that are placed on them, the ones they place on themselves, and the reality of who they are. In this installation participants place a pathway through a series of large scale photographs and narrative; as you go in through the path the audience views different stereotypes that are placed on the participants. As the audience returns through the path they view the reality of who the participants are, and ask the audience to question themselves, about what stereotypes we place on others and what stereotypes we place on ourselves.
