Why AjA?
As an artist, I know how powerful photography can be to transcend language, time and space. It is a dynamic tool for self expression. And as a mother, my worldview is one of immense compassion for others, especially for young people who are systematically ignored or ill treated by society. Through thoughtful and caring programming, AjA gives voice and agency to disenfranchised youth to reframe the negative narratives that surround them, and encourages self confidence that often has a positive ripple effect on their community.
How did you get to know AjA?
I learned about AjA through its founder, Shinpei Takeda, also an artist in our local community. AjA’s vision and positive impact really struck a chord with me as an artist and a caring person–and I want to do what I can to foster the great work that AjA does for the constituents we serve.
More about me
I am both an artist and independent curator. My background is in painting, printmaking and film. You can see my 144 foot photography installation at the San Diego Airport, Terminal 2 until April 2020. I’ve been in numerous exhibitions and online publications, and have received grants and fellowships. As a curator, I currently work for the Oceanside Museum of Art. One of the curatorial projects I am most proud of is the immersive new media festival I launched and produced–the Filmatic Festival at UCSD, which ran annually for three years.
