Why AjA?

With an international politics and development background, I am drawn to AjA’s mission of serving refugee youths from diverse resettlement communities here in San Diego. This country, founded by immigrants and settled by waves of people seeking refuge from all corners of the world, could not thrive without the full integration and inclusion of marginalized people. The model of empowering marginalized youth through media of art and visual storytelling is not only impactful for the youths themselves, but also uplifts the local communities by enriching the way people see themselves.

How did I get to know AjA

I first came to AjA first as an AmeriCorp volunteer after graduating from the International Affairs master’s program at UCSD, where I studied the economic and political dynamics of displacement and human trafficking. After leaving AjA to join the for-profit sector as a financial and systems analyst, and then corporate social responsibility executive, I continued to pay close attention to AjA’s work and impact in the community, and supported AjA financially through our corporate giving program.

More about me

Currently I serve as the Director and Chief Grants Officer of the Dr. Bronner’s Family Foundation. I am responsible for developing the Foundation’s grant program to address the plight faced by refugees and forced migrants both in the US and internationally, and overseeing all details of grant administration, strategic planning, and policy work. Previously, I was the Corporate Social Responsibility Manager and Strategic Advisor for Dr. Bronner’s, the premier soap brand in the natural and organic market, overseeing the company’s corporate sustainability, philanthropic, and governance strategies, and guiding the company’s long-term impact in these areas.
