Why AjA?

I joined Aja when I first arrived and started high school in the U.S. This was a period of time that was challenging for me due to the language barrier and cultural differences. However, AjA provided me a nurturing environment where I can express my identity while adapting to the

cultural differences and developing leadership skills. AjA instructors are some of the best mentors I could have asked for. I was able to meet and share ideas with many young, talented people, who became my good friends. So AjA is like a family to me. Furthermore, I understand the educational benefit that AjA provides for the youth community we serve. So, I hope to contribute my skills and experiences to support the growth of this organization in the future.

How did I get to know AjA?

In 2005, I was an AjA participant in the Journey Program. The class demographic included Somalian, Cambodian, Vietnamese, and Karen. We share our experiences as refugees and immigrants with each other and the world. It was a great opportunity for me to learn about the diversity of different cultures and how we can integrate in harmony through photography. I also joined another AjA’s Program called Youth Advisory Council Program, where I learned to develop leadership skills, to raise awareness, and to make a difference in my community.

More about me

I am currently working at BioLegend. My work focuses on product development of antibodies for research purposes through a series of assays. Aside from my biotech work, I used to work in non-profit organizations. Through my work with AjA, I was awarded the Neighborhood Excellence Student Leader, which also grants a fellowship for me to work with other non-profit.
